### Summary of Content The content discusses how to create a Side-by-Side Bar Chart in Tableau to compare the sales performance of two product categories—Office Supplies and Furniture—across different regions. The author, a marketing analyst, faced challenges in visualizing quarterly sales data in a table format, prompting the use of a bar chart for clearer comparisons. **Key Details:** - **What is a Side-by-Side Bar Chart?** It is a grouped bar chart that allows for easy comparison of multiple categories along a common axis. - **Steps to Create a Side-by-Side Bar Chart:** 1. Add the dimension (Region) to the Rows and Sales to the Columns. 2. Filter the categories (Office Supplies and Furniture) to compare. 3. Drag the Category to the Columns while holding the Ctrl key to display both categories side by side. 4. Use the Color card to differentiate the bars visually. 5. Add Sales to the label card for displaying sales figures on the bars. - **Creating a Stacked Side-by-Side Chart:** This involves adding additional measures (like Profit and Quantity) and using color coding to represent different categories within the same chart. The tutorial emphasizes the importance of visualizations in data analysis, making it easier to compare and understand metrics across different dimensions. ### Additional Context Tableau is a powerful data visualization tool widely used in business intelligence for creating interactive and shareable dashboards. Understanding how to create and manipulate different types of charts, like side-by-side and stacked bar charts, can significantly enhance data analysis and presentation. ### Hashtags for SEO #Tableau #DataVisualization #BarChart #MarketingAnalysis #SalesPerformance #BusinessIntelligence #DataAnalysis #TableauTutorial #SideBySideChart #StackedBarChart
While working as a marketing analyst, I needed to compare the sales performance of two different product categories, Office Supplies and Furniture, across different regions.
In our database, we have quarterly sales data, but in table format, it was difficult to see which category was performing better in each region. So, to make the comparison easier and more visual, I created a Side-by-Side Bar Chart in Tableau.
Using the side-by-side chart, we were able to display sales for both categories next to each other for each region and compare their sales trends.
In this tutorial, I will explain what a side-by-side chart is in Tableau and how to create one to compare the data metrics.
What is a Side-By-Side Bar Chart in Tableau?
In Tableau, the Side-by-side chart, also known as a grouped bar chart, is used to display multiple bars for different categories or groups next to each other along a common axis. This bar chart allows for easy comparison of values across different categories within the same view.

Create a Side-by-Side Bar Chart in Tableau
In this example, we will create a side-by-side bar chart to compare the Sales of categories Office Supplies and Furniture across different regions.
- First, we will add the dimension Region to the Rows, and Sales to the Columns.
Now, we have the sales of products across all regions.

- To compare the sales of categories Office Supplies and Furniture in all regions, add the category to the Filters section.
In the filters, select the checkbox for the categories that you need to compare and click on the OK button.

- After applying the filters, press the Ctrl key and drag the Category to the Columns. With this, the bar chart will display the sales of both selected categories side by side for each region.

- For comparison, we can also change the color of bars to differentiate them. For this, add the Category to the Color card in the Marks section.
This will display both bar charts in different colors, like Blue for Furniture and Orange for Office supply category.

- To add a more accurate sales comparison, we can also display sales figures on the bars. For this, add the Sales to the label card.
With this, we can see the sales figures on each bar.

This way, we can create a side-by-side bar chart in Tableau by following the above steps.

Create a Stacked Side-by-Side Chart in Tableau
In Tableau, we can modify a side-by-side chart to create a stacked side-by-side chart. In this example, we will create a side-by-side bar chart to display the Profit, Sales, and Quantity of sold products across various states in the USA.
In this chart, the measures will be divided by States, and then we will stack the bars with the Sub-Category.
- Add the States to the Columns, and to select specific states, click on the States in the Columns and select Edit Filters.
In the filter, select the state that you want to include in the bar chart and click OK.

- To compare the product quantity, profit, and sales across the states, add the Measure Names to Columns.
Click on the Measure Names and select Edit Filters. In the filter, select the values quantity, profit, and sales, then click OK.

- Add the Measure Values to the Rows, it will have the filters we have applied in the Measure Values, having values for quantity, sales, and profit.
With this, we will see a side-by-side chart distributed by states and grouped by measures of quantity, sales, and profit.

- To add stacking in this side-by-side bar chart, add the Category or the Sub-Category to the Color card.
Now the bars in the grouped data of states will be stacked by category, which is visible through different colors.

This way, we can create a stacked side-by-side bar chart in Tableau by following the above steps.
I hope you now understand how to create both side-by-side and stacked side-by-side bar charts in Tableau. These charts are useful in situations where you want to compare multiple metrics or categories across a standard dimension, like regions or states. By using colors, labels, and filters, we can make visualizations easier to compare and understand the data metrics.
